The synergy between the giant non-ferrochrome smelting company, the Zimbabwe Mining and Smelting Company (Zimasco) and Kwekwe General Hospital in a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) was enhanced after the company donated an assortment of medical equipment worth over US$100 000 to the health institution last Wednesday under the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) banner. The donation was handed over to the Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Larry Mavima by Zimasco’s executive chairman Lu Xiangkun. The donation which came at a critical time when the Covid-19 pandemic cases are rising, included, beds, medicine trolleys, computers, television sets, solar heaters, air conditioners and electrocardiography (ECG) machines.

Zimasco adopted the maternity ward at this institution and last year it carried out a massive refurbishment of that section at the hospital and more recently drilled a borehole in order to help improve sanitation and hygiene. Minister Mavima, speaking at the event, expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the donation made by Zimasco. He also thanked other corporates which made various donations to the Kwekwe District referral centre, in an effort to help improve the health delivery system. He said, “I am exhilarated to hand over an assortment of equipment valued at US$110 000 and indeed this equipment is critical. I appreciate the level of effort and contributions made by Zimasco towards fighting against Covid-19 in Kwekwe district.

“The donation of boreholes by Zimasco has had enormous impact towards improvement in water sanitation and hygiene which are critical components of Covid-19 mitigation and control. “The Government has adopted an inclusive approach towards this fight. My sincere gratitude goes to other corporates and Zimasco in particular for their sterling efforts towards improving our health delivery system”. Senator Mavima added that the donated equipment will go a long way in addressing capacity issues at Kwekwe General Hospital. He urged corporates and other development partners to emulate the good work by Zimaso and engage fully in corporate social responsibility and make Kwekwe a better place. “Corporates and individuals should extend partnerships with various government sectors to enhance innovation for improved health service delivery in the country. This donation by Zimasco came at an opportune time when the health facility is in dire need of refurbishment.

“Government acknowledges the invaluable commitment by health personnel, especially in this Covid-19 pandemic period. The Government is committed in resolving labour related issues in the health sector,” said Mavima. Speaking at the same occasion Kwekwe General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Patricia Mapanda thanked Zimasco for the donation saying it will go a long way in helping the health institution give first class treatment to patients. “I really appreciate the good work being done by Zimasco despite the fact that it is also facing economic challenges, it continues to do good and it has demonstrated that one thing that can travel faster than any virus is love.

“I’m aware that the Government and other corporates are also facing economic challenges though their desire is to help deliver a quality and comprehensive health care system to the citizens of Zimbabwe. “To the leadership of Zimasco and its workers, I say you have demonstrated to this community and especially Kwekwe General Hospital, your love and kindness to the under privileged. Honestly, the Moto of corporate social responsibility and Public-Private-Partnership demonstrated by Zimasco today should be emulated by all businesses and individuals,” said Dr Mapanda.

The Zimasco executive chairman Xiangkun pledged to continue supporting the local health facility. “We were here last year in June, handing over a refurbished maternity ward to the First Lady of Zimbabwe Auxillia Mnangagwa, a world class maternity ward for the benefit of ordinary citizens. Today we are donating an assortment of medical equipment to the hospital. We will continue to support the hospital,” said Xiangkun. Kwekwe General Hospital has 300 beds serving 300 000 residents of Kwekwe district and also has a nursing school with 200 students doing midwifery training.

Zimasco Kwekwe division has commissioned facilities to help in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the handover event, Namatai Mapfumo of Zimasco Kwekwe division said they were continuously looking at ways to combat the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic through providing necessary facilities needed to fight the disease.

He said that to date they have managed to work largely on dealing with water challenges where they have been sinking boreholes in the main suburbs of Kwekwe that is Mbizo and Amaveni

“As Zimasco Kwekwe division we came up with an action plan of how with can fit in the government efforts on combating the disease and our action is based on the logic that we must prevent the spread of the disease first”

“If the disease requires high standards of hygiene then water is important”

“We have drilled 3 boreholes in Mbizo which are being equipped and we are refurbishing another one in Kwekwe” he said.

Zimasco Kwekwe division also set up public facilities for hand washing across the city of Kwekwe.

“We have also set up hand washing machines in public places, to date we have managed to set 12 different facilities in the city of Kwekwe” he said.

Mapfumo said their emphasise on water delivery services also saw it fit to reach out to important institutions such as Kwekwe General Hospital where they donated tanks.

“The hospital at all times must have water, we have put up a 10000 litres capacity tank”

The company further handed over a ventilator machine to Kwekwe General Hospital.

“Under Treasure Mining Consultancy donated a ventilator machine to Zimasco, and we decided to take the donation to Kwekwe General Hospital”

“We have also set up a hand washing facility for people to wash their hands first before coming into the hospital” he added.

Mapfumo underscored the need to work together with the government saying that unity between people and government will help to stem the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

I urge the citizens to rally behind government calls .If our efforts are not concerted we and we are divided we will be weakened and we will be decimated and the future of the country will be in danger” he said.

Speaking on the same event Kwekwe General Hospital Superintendent Dr Patricia Mapanda thanked the Zimasco Kwekwe division for helping the government in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mapanda said that the company has been handy in many ways, helping to ease the challenges that are being faced by the government.

“I wish to extend my deepest appreciation to Zimasco our all weather friend for supporting and complementing government efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic which has bought a distress in people all over the world” she said.

Zimbabwean miners have thrown their weight behind Government’s roadmap towards attaining a US$12 billion mining industry in the next three years, saying the targets were achievable but implored the need to come up with a collective action plan.

Zimbabwe Chamber of Mines, a body that represents mining companies, told The Sunday Mail Business in an interview that local miners were ready to co-operate, given Government had shown the direction for the country’s mining sector.

On Monday, President Mnangagwa launched a strategic roadmap to propel the country’s mining sector to a US$12 billion mining industry by 2023.

In the chromite sector, Zimasco is building four new ferrochrome smelting complex with a capacity to produce 140 000 tonnes per annum. The smelting complex will be built at Neta in Mberengwa and is a joint venture with Afrochine Smelting.

The first furnace will be commissioned in 2021, followed by the commissioning of two furnaces in 2022 and the last in 2023.

Zimasco is also building the sixth furnace at the Kwekwe smelter with the capacity to produce 55 000 tonnes.

“We are quite confident that the sector targets set by the Government will be met,” Ms. Clara Sadomba, the spokesperson for Zimasco, a unit of China’s Sinosteel said.

Increased ferro-chrome output this year, projected to register 15 percent growth above 2018 production, is anticipated to result in 40 percent growth in chromite ore production compared to the same period last year.

Already, Zimbabwe has earned US$120 million from the export of chrome concentrates and lumps as well as high carbon ferro-chrome in the first four months of this year.

Zimbabwe Mining and Smelting Company (Zimasco) Chief Executive John Musekiwa told a recent mines conference that while Government’s thrust of value addition will decrease chrome ore exports, it will, however, drive ferro-chrome exports.

“Phenomenal growth of the Zimbabwe chrome industry is possible, but (ensuring) low-cost production is key; we have the resource; the market is there; (however), smelting is energy intensive and electricity constitutes the highest production cost component in Zimbabwe,” Mr Musekiwa said.

Currently, the highest level of chrome beneficiation in Zimbabwe is ferro-chrome production, but Government recently approved an investment by Chinese firm, Tsingshan Steel, which plans to invest over US$1 billion towards building a stainless steel production plant in the country.

Notably, as part of the roadmap of Tsingshan’s stainless steel production in Zimbabwe by 2026, Afrochine, a subsidiary of Tsingshan (the largest global stainless steel producer) will expand ferro-chrome production going forward.

“The increased ferro-chrome capacity on line (in Zimbabwe) will see increased chromite ore production in 2019 (year on year) of 40 percent compared to 2018 (assuming adequate electricity supply),” he said.

Zimbabwe is currently blighted by a crippling power shortage due to reduced water levels at Lake Kariba and frequent break down of old equipment at Hwange, Zimbabwe’s two major power plants, which has spawned rolling power cuts for domestic users.

“Future years will see chromite ore production increase in line with the growth of ferro-chrome production. Chromite ore exports in 2018 totalled 800 000 tonnes,” Mr Musekiwa said.

Zimbabwe’s ferro-chrome production, he noted, was set to grow significantly on the back of new commissioned capacity, which will see production jumping 15 percent to 419 000 tonnes from 365 000 tonnes last year.

“Resumption of operations at Zimbabwe Alloys on the back of refurbishments currently underway, coupled with expansion of production from Zimasco will see output ramping up in the coming years,” Mr Musekiwa said.

The anticipated growth of Zimbabwe’s chrome industry was also recently confirmed by Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando at the International Chromium Development Conference in Victoria Falls.

“While 2018 (ferro-chrome) production of around 350 000 tonnes was significant for the country, new capacity being commissioned and planned for commissioning within the year could see a 20 percent increase of ferro-chrome production capacity to 418 000 tonnes in 2019,” he said.

The minister said chrome ore production will need to increase in line with increasing consumption in carbon and stainless steel production, hence there is need for significant investment in developing new mining capacity.

Chromium has no substitute in the production of stainless steel, which is the backbone for global economic growth, hence its global acclaim as a strategic commodity.

Being host to an estimated 12 percent of the global chromite resources and production currently contributing less than 3 percent to global output, the Zimbabwean chrome ore industry has significant potential for growth going forward.

Zimbabwe currently has 14 ferro-chrome operations concentrated mainly in the Midlands Province with the two largest players, Zimasco and Afrochine, operating medium sized furnaces while the rest utilise small furnaces.

Zimbabwe holds the world’s second largest known chrome ore deposits, after South Africa. Global chrome ore resources are estimated in excess of 12 billion tonnes, according to Roskill Chromium Global industry Outlook 2018.

Chrome is one of the key minerals through which Government seeks to grow mineral exports from US$3,2 billion last year to US$12 billion from 2023 going forward, as the country gears up for upper middle income status by 2030.

Last year the mineral was one of the top six mineral commodities that contributed the bulk of Zimbabwe’s export earnings along with the usual top performers platinum and gold as well as diamonds, nickel and coal.

Government is currently working on a chrome development policy to drive growth of the industry, consistent with the yet to be exploited reserves.

The country’s largest integrated ferrochrome producer Zimasco (Pvt) Ltd has thrown Kwekwe General Hospital a lifeline after it donated 2 state of the art laundry machine, drying machine, press iron, and roller iron an incinerator and refurbished the maternity ward at the health institution at a cost of US$200 000.

Addressing delegates at the official handover of the Corporate Social Responsibility project, Zimasco General Manager-Marketing and Administration Clara Sadomba said the refurbishment of the maternity ward will contribute to the reduction of neonatal mortality in the community.

“With regards the Kwekwe General Hospital project, we have identified that this very important facility which has such a direct impact on the community of not just Kwekwe but large areas of the Province was not well resourced and was in need of assistance in some critical areas of its operation.

“Zimasco, therefore, adopted some of the public amenities at Kwekwe General Hospital and refurbished them to suit world-class standards at a cost of USD200,000.

“The refurbishment of the Maternity Ward has augmented access to maternal health care services and will contribute to the reduction of neonatal mortality in the community,” she said.

She added that the refurbishments have brought these critical facilities up to the right standard to protect and maintain the basic health of patients and hospital workers.

“In addition, the kitchen, laundry and incinerator refurbishments have brought these critical facilities up to the right standard to protect and maintain the basic health of patients and hospital workers.

“As an organisation, our relationship with Kwekwe General Hospital is a long-standing one and will continue into the future as well,” said Sadomba.

Speaking during the same event, the First lady who was the guest of honor challenged other corporate organisations to emulate the generosity and sense of responsibility displayed by the two companies.

“Sable chemicals and Zimasco have shown appreciation of such policies and came forward to assist Kwekwe General hospital in a big way.

“As a third world country, health delivery systems might be lagging behind especially in terms of information communication and technology.

“l am proud to mention that Sable chemicals and Zimasco came in handy as funders, therefore, l am challenging other corporate organisations to emulate the generosity and sense of responsibility displayed by sable chemicals and Zimasco,” she said.
